Sometimes the best stories start off a little bit scary.
Our Write-Your-Life classes, Garage Girls and our amazing community of soulful, supportive creatives only started because something big for us ended. In this case, it was our day jobs, whole careers we'd built over two decades, working in magazines, book publishing and PR. The companies we worked for just closed up shop because the industries that they were apart of had changed.
So, yeah, losing the identities that we associated with these old titles wasn't just scary. It was terrifying. One of us was the breadwinner of the family, and the other was on her own following a divorce. But being writers, we knew that looking at our own lives as a story could help us glimpse the beauty of the hidden plot that was trying to unfold all along. As Joseph Campbell once said, you have to let go of the life you planned in order to have the one that is waiting for you.
Even the darkest storm clouds deliver silver linings within which lie the clues to finding bliss and purpose. For us, we discovered a great friendship that quickly evolved into daily chats where laughter kept us sane and productive brainstorms not only reignited old dreams, but challenged us to take the steps necessary to attain them.
In each other, we found a soul sister, who helped to re-imagine what was possible creatively in our 40s and beyond. And what we learned was a vital lesson: In order to be who we were meant to become, we had to let go of who we used to be. And to realize our own dreams, we had to finally let go of building someone else's.
Our daily fun chats and brainstorms evolved into plans for Court to move from the Pacific Northwest to Los Angeles (Beth pitched her on the idea by sending inviting pics of her pool and jacuzzi, which thankfully worked.) Now, we're finally in the same place and working to build our creative empire, which we fondly call The Garage Girls. (Yup, we work in our garages.)
Together, we know we're stronger and can do anything. And that's why we've created Write Your Life (Los Angeles) and opened our doors for anyone for whom our story resonates. If you're facing any challenges writing your second act, come and join our table.
Our Writer's Room at The Farmhouse in West Los Angeles is the perfect place to discover not only the hidden story of your own life. But, discover a part you may have been meant to play in other people's stories, too.
